The NCHP takes your academic and personal progress very seriously and aims to support you in all aspects of the course as best we can. However, we also expect you to take your development seriously. Therefore, when it comes to plagiarism, we take the stance that it is unacceptable and will result in dismissal from the course; fees will not be refunded in the event of plagiarism.
Plagiarism includes passing off another’s work as your own, (including passing off the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) within assignments as your own) with or without the permission of the other. You are encouraged to use quotes from credible sources, but they must be credited to the source.
You may discuss ideas with your colleagues on the course; this is encouraged, but you must draw a line before reaching conclusions. For example, paying someone else to write your essay is considered cheating and plagiarism, as is using “essays for sale” websites. Similarly you can use AI safely and ethically to support your studies but any use of AI to write or paraphrase your work does fall under our plagiarism policy.
We use plagiarism-detection software on all submitted work as part of a standard procedure when marking submissions.
Use of AI within Study and Assessment
We understand that the use of AI in all sectors is increasing and we aim as a college to be progressive in the way that we embrace tools to support learning and development. The assignments we set provide you with essential learning opportunities in terms of critical thinking, critical synthesis, finding and reading research as well communicating an argument. We work in a profession in which conveying meaning and understanding are integral, therefore we need to assess your skills in understanding and communicating nuance. Reliance on AI prevents you from developing these skills which are essential for your practice. However, we recognise where AI can support you in your learning to enhance your training.
You are not required to use AI for any of your studies with us. If you do use AI it is integral that you use it in a way that abides by the academic standards expected of NCHP and upholds the values of integrity, honesty, transparency and inclusion. Unethical use of AI will be treated under the plagiarism policy above and could result in dismissal from your course. Below are some pointers of the safe and ethical use of AI.
- You must not provide personal or confidential information about any individual or upload any copyrighted documentation which includes assignment titles and course material to any Generative AI tool.
- You may use Generative AI to support you in your studies, for example with consolidation, in discussion as you would a colleague and in the preparation of assignments only (not in the writing of them) however you must acknowledge its use in any assessments using the Harvard referencing system.
- You may use AI to support you in proofing (spelling and grammar) but it cannot be used to rephrase or paraphrase.
- You must be aware that the information provided by AI, may be incorrect, incomplete or irrelevant. You must take responsibility for reading any sources suggested by AI.
If using AI to support your preparation in assessment you must:
- Reference all AI generated outputs using the Harvard style as follows:
- Summarise how you used AI in an appendix that describes your conversation with the tool and what you did with the outputs.
- Keep a copy of your conversation with AI should you be asked for it by the marking team
