NCHP Personal Therapy and Personal Development Policy and Procedure

Personal Therapy and Personal Development Policy The National College of Hypnosis & Psychotherapy

This policy is for students and trainees working towards UKCP accreditation on our Hypno-psychotherapy Pathway or Hypno-psychotherapeutic Counsellor Pathway.

Hypno-Psychotherapy Pathway

The College of Outcome-Oriented and Hypno-Psychotherapies’ Standards of Education Training requirements for personal development for hypno-psychotherapists are:

“250 hours personal development of which a minimum of 48 hours must be contracted psychotherapy, on an individual basis with a UKCP registered psychotherapist or equivalent. The purpose of all developmental processes, in this context, is as a support to the student as they progress towards the goal of being a psychotherapist. It may be equally concerned with development of resilience and awareness than with the resolution of personal issues, when this best supports the practitioner’s development towards effective and ethical practice. The contracted hours may be in any form or forms of psychotherapy recognised by UKCP or BACP or BPS. Recognised modality specific practices in personal development include:

  • Therapeutic tasking journaled by the individual and/or monitored by the contracted psychotherapist.
  • Personal developmental quests journaled by the individual and monitored by the Training Organisation.
  • Journaled utilisation of self-hypnosis within a structured personal development course e.g., Mindfulness Training.
  • Attendance of group therapy with a registered Psychotherapist.”

At NCHP, we recognise the value to students and trainees of being able to take part in personal development activities at the time that is right for them throughout training and encourage a wide range of activities throughout training.

The following guidance around personal development hours applies:

Personal Therapy

  • A minimum of forty-eight hours of personal therapy must take place during training.
  • Forty-eight hours must be with a UKCP (or equivalent) therapist.
  • Forty-eight hours must be on a one-to-one basis.
  • Students and trainees can do all hours with one or different therapists as appropriate.
  • Any modality recognised by UKCP is appropriate (therapists must be in SCoPEd band C for psychotherapy and band B or C for psychotherapeutic counselling).
  • Personal therapists must not also be the student or trainee’s supervisor.
  • More therapy hours can count towards personal development, but at least forty-eight hours must be completed.
  • Evidence of therapy hours must be provided as part of the trainee’s final submission. A letter from their therapist with the number of hours and their qualifications is acceptable.

Other Personal Development Hours

  • Four hours can be counted from the Stage 1 self-reflexive journal (SCARF).
  • Forty-eight hours can be counted from the fitness to practice log, which aims to document your development towards fulfilling the SCoPEd competencies for psychotherapists.
  • The remaining hours can be flexible, and students are encouraged to consider ways in which they can meet these requirements in a meaningful way for them throughout the programme.
  • All hours must be recorded in the log provided, and a journal to be kept to document development.
  • This log must be reviewed each year in practice to identify gaps in training, development, or practice and to gain approval from NCHP for activities carried out.
  • A proportion of at least 50% of the total self-development hours must be personal (rather than professional)

Hypno-Psychotherapeutic Counsellor Pathway

According to the UKCP Standards of Education and Training for Psychotherapeutic Counsellors in relation to personal development:

“Candidates are expected to have undertaken a minimum of 105 hours of personal therapy, normally concurrently with their training. Therapy undertaken prior to the commencement of training may not normally be counted towards this requirement. The therapy must normally be with a qualified registered UKCP psychotherapeutic counsellor or psychotherapist. The therapy must be in the theoretical orientation of the training.”

NCHP abides by the Standards of Education and Training. Those on the hypno-psychotherapeutic counsellor pathway are not required to undertake the 250 hours of personal development that is needed on the hypno-psychotherapeutic counsellor pathway; however, they are required to undertake the following:

Personal Therapy

  • A minimum of 105 hours of personal therapy during training must normally occur. The Academic Board must consider any application for an exception.
  • One hundred and five hours must be with a UKCP or equivalent psychotherapist or psychotherapeutic counsellor.
  • One hundred and five hours must be on a one-to-one basis.
  • Students and trainees can choose to do all their hours with one therapist or different therapists as is appropriate.
  • Any modality recognised by UKCP is appropriate.
  • Personal therapists must not also be the student or trainee’s supervisor.
  • Evidence of therapy hours must be provided as part of the trainee’s final submission; a letter from their therapist with the number of hours and their qualifications is acceptable.

In addition to personal therapy hours, all students on the hypno-psychotherapeutic counsellor pathway must complete the fitness to practice log to demonstrate their development within the competencies of SCoPEd required for a psychotherapeutic counsellor.
