Mindfulness in Psychotherapy

We are increasingly becoming aware of the importance of mindfulness within psychotherapeutic practice.

Whether through approaches that use mindfulness as an explicit tool, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), or more implicitly within an integrative framework, mindfulness-based therapies offer valuable benefits.

For both client and therapist, this is a route to more awareness and compassion.

How You Will Benefit…

This two-day course will cover the background to mindfulness in therapy, exploring specific challenges therapists face in mindfulness-based work and tensions when integrating mindfulness with other approaches.

The weekend will primarily focus on the ACT model to illuminate the use of mindfulness in psychotherapy, while DBT skills training will also be referenced to highlight a different approach.

The course aims to provide you with an array of ideas, approaches, and interventions to incorporate and enhance your client work, which you can begin to integrate immediately, regardless of modality.

Topics Covered Include…

  • Definitions of mindfulness and its use in psychotherapeutic practice (as well as understanding misconceptions);
  • The foundations of the ACT model
  • Setting behavioural goals with clients
  • Understanding the role of creative hopelessness
  • Interventions to support psychological flexibility
  • The ACT model in practice
  • Mindfulness in DBT
  • Skills training in DBT

Your Tutor – William Davies

Your trainer for this weekend is William Davies, a graduate of the NCHP and a UKCP Hypno-Psychotherapist.

Before training as a therapist, William had many years of work experience across business and the arts, from large corporations to small businesses and self-employment.

After initial training in counselling, he graduated from NCHP and, since qualifying, has focused on studying and working with Mindfulness-based and Compassion-focused approaches, which have become central to his client work.

This was guided by his direct personal experience of mindfulness and compassion practices over many years, and he has trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).

William is also qualified as a clinical mindfulness teacher, enabling him to facilitate 8-session courses such as Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (a NICE-approved course shown to reduce the risk of relapse & recurrence of depression for people who have experienced multiple episodes of depression).
