Introduction

This NCHP policy outlines the process for recognising Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) as part of training with the NCHP and for potential accreditation with the UKCP.

Evidence submitted for APL must meet defined criteria and align with the QAA Principles for APL practice (see the QAA website for reference).

Principles

  • APL procedures are fair, robust, and transparent.

  • The UKCP reserves the right to oversee any APL application.

  • The NCHP and/or The UKCP College of Outcome Oriented and Hypno-Psychotherapies may amend APL criteria at any time.

  • Final authority for determining APL awards rests with the NCHP Training and Standards Officer and the Board.

APL Application Options

Applicants may apply for APL towards:

  • Training as a Psychotherapist

  • Training as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor

Separate procedures and application forms exist for each route.

Required Evidence

Applicants must provide clear evidence supporting the claims made in their APL application form.
Acceptable forms of evidence include (but are not limited to):

  • Academic transcript(s)

  • Course learning outcomes and certification(s) showing successful completion

  • Letter(s) of confirmation

  • Reflective journal(s)

  • Completed assignments for the relevant portion(s) of the course

Evidence Requirements

Evidence must demonstrate that:

  • There is a clear match between prior learning/experience and NCHP course content or practice requirements

  • The evidence is valid and reliable

  • The applicant was appropriately assessed and passed that assessment

  • The assessment was at Level 7 (Master’s level) or Level 6 (for those seeking direct accreditation as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor)

  • Most of the learning occurred within seven years of the application date

Fees

Fees depend on the training pathway and are detailed on the NCHP website (nchp.ac.uk) and in the Offer Letter.

Additional Notes

Applicants who are at a post-graduate level of competence and who hold an accredited hypnotherapy qualification (NCH/NCFE HPD Level or higher) may apply to join the Pathway to UKCP for Hypnotherapists via the online application form on the NCHP website.
